It is said that 10k hours is the magic number to be an expert at anything.

I know there are definitely people with 10K hours total on their account. How about the number of people with 10K hours on one character?

I myself have about 1500 hours on ele and 900 hours on necro, out of about 4.5k hours. (About half was afk with computer left on for holidays, left in the background, and such though.)

I'm just curious. 10K hours would be about $100K real life money if you work for only $10 (most players work for more or are 13-18).

I'm at just under 5206 hours on my account. I'm willing to wager that anybody that has over 10k on one character has done a ridiculous amount of AFKing.

well my highest character has 1600 hours--and he did afk during holidays for the masks (next has 1300) with only ~9000 on the account (though I must also mention I have LOTS of characters--about 18 I play regularly).

Here inlies a major flaw in that as it relates to GW. It does not take nearly that amount of time on one character to achieve the highest tier in GW. So there is no real reason for someone to strive for anything past that tier. This is why most players have multiple characters.

ex) it doesn't take 10k hours to become an expert at tying an over-hand knot.....but it might to become an expert at tying all knots.

There are alway variables to consider. The general rule cannot be applied to everything.

I have about 4k over 47 months, but I have quit/return multiple times over the years. My assassin has 2.1k over 24 months.

I think many if not most of the hours are due to leaving Guild Wars on with my character standing in my GH when I used to have class, slept, AFK'd, etc.
I often get messages saying that I have played for X days, and they suggest for me to take a break :P

who the hell spends enough time playing guild wars to reach 10k hours on a character? Iv got like 3k on my account, and much of that was spent afk.

simply playing 10k hrs does not mean the player is pro or anything. as a matter of fact, even 1000k hrs is irrelevent. this is simply because these ppl can go afk all day for all we know.

even IF this entire 10k rule is real, it is entirely unapplicable to the gw /age system. why? because /age is not a good indication of how much time a player REALLY spent, and what did he spent it on - chatting? pve?pvp?afk? there is simply no accurate way of measuring

Agree with Thevil King , considering there are many things that can be done afking ( i.e canthan new year ) , ask to be ran some titles , time waitings to form in pvp or to wait an opponent , i can't consider /age is something relevant ...
To give you an example , for last 2 weeks , i waited twice more than i played in pvp ( restarts/time form especially .. )

13382h over 61 months on my favo char. But I'm extremely lazy sometimes, now and then i forget to turn off GW and comp when going to bed, so as much as 75% of it might be 100% idle afk time.
Does that makes me an expert? not really lol. Im a decent player, no more than that.

Sure there's A LOT of AFKing - be it 9 Rings, breaks, you name it - but I'm a rather obsessive player nonetheless:

The bad habbit of leaving characters AFK has admitedly gone rampant during the hack-syndrome last year, to the point that I used to log on on my netbook using a UMTS connection while @ work just to check my account during pauses.

Guild Wars now exists 65 months. Assuming that Faiths played for this long, that gives him an average of about 10 hours a day. Thats just mad crazy. Don't people need to work and eat or something?

uhh wow just ruined like 63 months of starting a new toon every time it hit 1k hours i though that was the rule for expert

You cannot become a expert if you haven't played with other professions.

And what others have said. 10k hours do not say anything. Maybe they only pve'd. So they are very bad in pvp. Or maybe the player was afk alot! I for one, have quite some hours on my LdoA. >.>

Oh and lol @ people with more then 15k hours on a account. it's sad.. really.
